Our Father’s Business

David Bragg

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” These were the first recorded words of Jesus (Luke 2:49). His last recorded words before ascending to heaven are also enlightening:

And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.

And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:46-49).

Every word Jesus spoke in between seems intentionally directed towards explanation of or preparation for carrying out the business of God. What was his “Father’s business”? In Jesus’ own words it was “to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). Our Father’s business is evangelism, the Great Commission.

Today the Father’s business is left to the church, the body of Christ. It is up to us to carry out the vital work of evangelism. Without evangelism our children will be lost. Without evangelism the church will die. Without evangelism the Father’s business will cease. This church needs to realize the importance of the work we have been called to do. We need to be about “our Father’s business.”
